Those with social learning challenges are not adequately defined by their labels. At this workshop we will define and discuss three differ-ent levels of social functioning challenges and how to modify treatment approaches and future planning based on these different levels. These levels are known as Winner’s “Social Thinking-Social Communication Profile.” We will further explore how reading comprehension and written expression challenges may be related to perspective taking weaknesses. We will then review how to teach abstract social lessons with more concrete language and treatment by exploring the “Social Thinking Vocabulary” and related lessons. These lessons are easily applied in the home, community and schools. They can be used for persons with ASDs, developmental disabilities, social learning challenges and for all children. Target audience: CRDI, CRDP and CSSS educators, professionals, teachers, school staff and community workers, CPE educators and parents. Objectives• Participants will be able to explain how mental manipulation (one aspect of Theory of Mind) plays into living as an independent adult. • Participants will be able to define 3 basic levels of perspective taking skills and how these impact classroom and job success. • Participants will define how reading comprehension and written expression are impacted by weak perspective taking skills. • Participants will be able to explain how we teach students to be aware of how their body, eyes and brain are perceived to be in the group, using social thinking vocabulary.• Participants will be able to describe “Superflex” and the “Team of Unthinkables!”• Participants will be able to differentiate between a singular imagination and shared imagination and how the latter contributes to social conversational skills. speaker biography Michelle Garcia Winner, MA, CCC is a speech language pathologist who specializes in the treatment of students with social cognitive deficits, which includes diagnoses such as Autism, Asperger syndrome and non-verbal learning disorder. Michelle’s goal is to help administrators, educators and parents appreciate how social thinking and social skills are an integral part of a student’s academic and social experiences as well as being critical for success in adulthood. She was honored with a “Congressional Special Recognition Award” in 2008. Michelle believes we can all help our students learn these abstract social lessons.
