Support Worker Training Program - Winter 2019

Parents of children or adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and or developmental disabilities use Support Workers to help their children integrate into a wide range of settings: pre-schools; schools; social, recreational and community activities, including sports programs and summer camps.

The Support Worker Training Program is a unique and comprehensive program that provides participants with the many critical skills needed in order to find employment in this field. It is given by professionals who specialize in working with persons with special needs. 


Course Topics:

  1. Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders and other special needs
  2. Role of the Support Worker Role
  3. Strategies for skill acquisition
  4. Problem behaviours - antecedent strategies
  5. Problem behaviours - reactive strategies
  6. Communication
  7. Play and social skills
  8. Fading presence and prompts
  9. Self-management, professionalism, parents, ethics

Course Methodology: Weekly lectures, PowerPoint presentations (copies provided), group discussions and practical exercises.  Attendance and active participation in all 12 classes is mandatory in order to obtain the "Certificate of Attendance: 24-hour Support Workder Training Program".
