Support Worker Training Program

12 CLASSES - 24 HOURS

 

Parents of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder or a developmental disability use Support Workers in order to help integrate their child into a wide range of recreational and social community activities, including sports programs and summer camps, as well as in school and pre-school settings. 

The Support Worker Training Program is a unique and comprehensive program that provides participants with the many critical skills needed in order to find employment in this developing field. It is comprised of ten, two-hour classes, facilitated by professionals who specialize in working with persons with special needs. 

 

Course Topics:

  1. Support Worker Role, Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders and Other Special Needs
  2. Strategies for skill acquisition
  3. Problem behaviours - antecedent strategies
  4. Problem behaviours - reactive strategies
  5. Communication
  6. Play and social skills
  7. Fading presence and prompts
  8. Self-management, professionalism, parents, ethics


Course Methodology: Weekly lectures, PowerPoint presentations (copies provided), group discussions and practical exercises.

 

Attendance and active participation in all 12 classes is mandatory in order to obtain the "Certificate of Attendance: 24-hour Support Workder Training Program".
