Parent Training Online Series

 

This Online Training Series for Parents of Children with an ASD is brought to you by the Miriam Foundation and the Unicorn Children's Foundation. It includes six modules that will introduce you to a broad range of topics related to Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), with a central focus on your role, as a parent, in providing support, structure and stimulation to your child with ASD. Each module runs between 35 minutes and one hour.

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you reside in the Province of Quebec and are the parent of a child who is receiving services, or is on a wait-list to receive services, you may be eligible to receive a similar online training program free of charge. Consult the DI/TSA/DP department at your local CIUSSS/CISSS for more information.

 

COURSE STRUCTURE

This course is offered to you by the Gold Centre, through KnowledgeOne’s online learning platform. Participants register on-line and take the course in the comfort of their own home. Once you have registered and paid for the  training, you will be sent login and password information, and a link to the training. You will have six (6) months to complete all six modules. Each module is approximately 35 minutes to one hour long, and modules must be completed in sequence, in order to unlock the following module. A series of questions are included within each module in the program to assess your level of comprehension. A correct answer must be given in order to continue, and you have an unlimited number of tries on these quizzes. Once the training is completed, a certificate of completion can be downloaded from the site.

PROGRAM CONTENT

MODULE 1: Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Instructor: Nathalie Garcin, Ph.D.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  2. Recognize the signs & associated symptoms of children with ASD
  3. Understand some of the challenges for children with an ASD
  4. Describe recent research studies on the prevalence and the causes of ASD
  5. What are the steps in the diagnosis of an ASD
  6. Learn how to get organized to better navigate the resources available 

MODULE 2: Encouraging Appropriate Behaviours

Instructor: Ali Dussault, M.Ed., BCBA

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the process of learning
  2. Name and describe the 4 functions of behaviour
  3. Identify strategies to reduce problematic behaviour
  4. Describe strategies for promoting adaptive behaviour

MODULE 3: Toilet Training

Instructor: Ali Dussault, M.Ed., BCBA

Learning Objectives

  1. Determine if your child is showing signs of readiness for toileting
  2. Describe how to prepare for toilet training
  3. Plan a trip training program for urination training
  4. Describe how and when to do training for bowel movements and bedwetting 

MODULE 4: The Acquisition and Promotion of Language

Instructor: Julie McIntyre, M.O.O., S.L.P.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the difference between communication, language and speech in children
  2. Understand the typical course of language development in children
  3. Describe language difficulties often found in children with ASD
  4. Identify strategies to help your child develop language and communication skills

MODULE 5: Promoting Play – Positive parent-child interactions

Instructor: Jillian Mills, M.S.(A.)

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the importance of communicating with your child through play
  2. Describe how to identify your child’s interests and sensory preferences
  3. Understand how to meet your child at his or her level of language and play development
  4. Describe strategies, games and toys to be used every day to help engage your child in play 

MODULE 6: Sleep in Children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder

Instructors: Roger Godbout, Ph.D., & Evelyne Martello, B.Sc.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the rules that govern normal sleep patterns
  2. Identify the characteristics of sleep in children with ASD
  3. Be able to establish a bedtime routine that favors independence and good sleep
  4. Learn how to promote an optimal sleep environment that incorporates physical, sensory and relaxing elements
